A
fuse panel is obsolete, and some think a “fuse box” is dangerous. We specialize in converting electrical systems from fuses to circuit breakers.

They do the same job. But one does it better, and more safely. They cut off power to a circuit whenever the current jumps above a safe level. Fuses burn out to shut it down. Breaker switches trip to “off”.
It is overload protectionPower supplies must have overload protection, to protect electronic equipment and prevent an electrical fire. Without a fuse panel or breakers, power surges or short circuits will burn out appliances, circuit boards and wiring. Any of these could start a fire and damage your electrical system.
Good reasons to convert to a circuit breaker away from fuses
- Fuses are old technology that can be dangerous
- Circuit breakers are safer to reset: you never touch any live electric parts
- No search for spare fuses or running out to buy more.
- Your home can have more power available
- The panel box is usually smaller
What’s dangerous about a fuse panel? They haven’t been standard in new construction in years, and so the wiring is breaking down, as all wiring does with age. Perhaps more importantly, they were never designed for the kind of high amperage appliances we use today. Some people simply put in a larger fuse, which can also cause wiring damage. These are all fire hazards. A fuse is simply a piece of wire in a casing. If too much current flows, the wire overheats and melts. This interrupts the power supply. And explains why you must replace a fuse – once the wire melts it is worthless.
- In a breaker system, an element has replaced the wire. If it heats, the element bends and triggers a spring. This shuts the circuit down. Nothing melts. Once the element cools, you reset the breaker and power is back on. It even sounds a lot safer, doesn’t it?
Fuse panel conversion is a job for professionals onlyWe are alarmed at the amount of misinformation on the internet about accomplishing a conversion as a do-it-yourself project. This is the control panel for an entire building’s electrical wiring and circuitry! There are codes and standards that must be maintained. In fact, the job usually requires an electrical permit, and most often it is only issued to licensed electrical contractors. If someone moves ahead on a D-I-Y fuse panel replacement, they face fines, refusal by the utility company to provide power, and the every-present threat of fire from amateur wiring.
There are two levels of conversionIn order to give your home more power, the utility company will need to replace the incoming feed wires to your home, which you will pay for; otherwise the switch to breakers modernizes the overload protection but won’t deliver any more juice. Your current wiring coming into the house from the power grid is sized to the demands your fuse panel was installed to handle.
- Of course, we will be turning off all of the power to do the conversion to the circuit breaker panel.
But you will never again face a morning when microwaving oatmeal while popping-in toast blows a fuse; you try to find one, have to replace it, and spend so much time you have to skip eating to leave home on time. With your new breaker box, you flip a switch and are back in the kitchen before the oatmeal even cools.
