Hi-Pot testing uncovers problems that might cause a device to fail. "Hi-Pot" is short for high potential (high voltage). We do this test to find nicked or crushed insulation, stray wire strands or braided shielding, conductive or corrosive contaminants around the conductors, terminal spacing problems, and tolerance errors in IDC cables.
- This is an employee safety issue: If insulation breaks down, it can cause shock or death to anyone that comes into contact with the faulty product. The theory behind the test is that if a deliberate over-flow of voltage does not cause insulation to break down, the product will be safe to use under normal operating conditions.
